The Old Saxon form is reconstructed from compounds and derivatives rather than directly attested as an independent verb. The Germanic verb originally belonged to the strong class 2; after being borrowed into Scandinavian, it was adapted as a weak verb with vowel shortening and consonant doubling.\nThe further origin is uncertain. The Germanic verb has traditionally been connected with a metathesized s-mobile form of *kleh₂w- (“hook, peg, latch”), which would make it related to Latin claudō (“to close”), but this connection is disputed and should not be treated as established. The logical sense “to infer, conclude” developed under the influence of Latin conclūdō (“to shut together; conclude, infer”), a prefixed derivative of claudō (“to close”).\nCompare Norwegian Nynorsk slutte and slutta, Danish slutte, Swedish sluta, West Frisian slute, Dutch sluiten and German schließen (“to close, shut; conclude”).",

The Germanic verb has traditionally been connected with a metathesized s-mobile form of *kleh₂w- (“hook, peg, latch”), which would make it related to Latin claudō (“to close”), but this connection is disputed and should not be treated as established.
